A Striking Critique of Modern Society: YuYu's Bold Take on the 'Tortured Genius' 10th May - 20th May 2023

Throughout the course of history, the exploration of dominance and submission has beena long-standing aspect of human society, appearing in various contexts including socio-political, religious, philosophical, cultural, and erotic realms. While these manifestations differ in many ways, they share similar underlying substructures. Despite progress in modern societies toward eliminating non-consensual physical and mental oppression, there are still similarities between past practices and current forms of control.

GAG is situated within the current socio-political climate, which is marked by ongoing debates surrounding issues of power, control, and identity. Against this backdrop, YuYu's latest experimental body of work reconnoiters the complex interplay of power dynamics within modern societies, drawing upon borrowed elements from both classical paintings and BDSM culture. Through the three new works presented in this exhibition, YuYu explores the concept of the 'tortured genius' as it relates to the primary pillars of religion, politics, and the self. By examining the struggles and personal issues that are often romanticized as indispensable elements of creative output, YuYu seeks to expose the underlying power dynamics that exist between the artist and society at large. The concept of the 'tortured genius' is thus used as a lens through which to explore the broader themes of dominance and submission, highlighting the ways in which power is wielded and controlled in different contexts. By examining the constraints of religion, politics, and the self, GAG invites the audience to engage in a moment of critical reflection and introspection regarding the fetishisation of pain. The exhibition creates an immersive installation that transforms the entire grounds of IHAM Gallery into a visceral experience, resembling an underground club venue that amplifies the concepts of dominance and submission. A dimmed red light envelops the entire space, making the screens the natural focal point. The industrial soundscape, created in collaboration with the London-based music producer MarcelDune, completes the sentiments of intimacy and discomfort that echo the themes explored in this show.

GAG is a thought-provoking exhibition that challenges its viewers to reconsider assumptions about power, control, and the fetishisation of people and traumas. Through its exploration of the 'tortured genius' and the power dynamics within society at large, YuYu's work disrupts the status quo of web3 and delves deep into the complexities of human society."

< About >

IHAM is Europe’s first-ever crypto art gallery located in Paris, France. IHAM hosted its very first NFT exhibition in June of 2021, and various shows centered around crypto art are held here today. IHAM has been inviting & hosting the art of crypto artists worldwide, doing its part in pushing crypto art over into the realm of the masses.
We aim to get crypto art accepted as part of art history and believe curated solo/group exhibitions will help achieve that sought-after goal.

The above-mentioned drop is hosted by IHAM Gallery (Europe’s first crypto art gallery) and 0xCura (a curatorial team led by Grida, ShinyTiger, and Hwaji).  Your art will be dropped on the NFT marketplace, and also be exhibited in IHAM Gallery’s physical location in Paris, FR.  The exhibition will most often consist of 3-4 artists including yourself who share similarities in approaches to their works, while also highlighting the strengths of the individual artists.
